Jennifer Stone, LCSW-R

Jennifer Stone, LCSW-R is a licensed clinical social worker located in New York City and seeing clients virtually from all over New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Florida. She is a Beck Institute Certified Clinician (BI-CBT), a designation that only 14 other providers hold in New York State. She is also a Diplomate from the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (A-CBT).

She started her private practice in 2009 while working within community mental health centers at The Institute for Family Health whose goal is to serve the under-served throughout New York City aiming to provide the highest quality medical care, social service support and evidence based mental health treatment to all New Yorkers.

She worked alongside primary care physicians and the mental health and social service teams to attain a holistic view of patients and provide a variety of assistance to a highly vulnerable population. Through her years working in community health centers, she polished management skills, provided, and completed training in a variety of areas from working with clients with suicidality and trauma to maximizing services at bustling mental health clinics while also providing exceptional clinical care to some of the most fragile clients in NYC- Quite a challenge and absolutely necessary! It was in this setting that she started to specialize in working with depression and anxiety and honed her skills in a variety of types of therapeutic models that are evidence-based such as cognitive behavior therapy.

Jennifer initially gravitated towards behaviorally focused treatment since her first introduction to CBT in graduate school at NYU where she completed her Master of Arts in Social Work. Her interest in understanding how one’s perspective, or rather their story can change how one feels, paved the way for her to pursue a career in talk therapy and specifically in CBT.

Over the last 20 years, Jennifer became an expert in treating anxiety, stress, depression, perfectionism, binge eating and weight loss/weight management, insomnia, trauma and executive function skills. Her training background includes the Beck Institute where she became a Beck Institute Certified Clinician (BI-CBT), a rare designation and one of fourteen certified providers in New York State. Jennifer is a Diplomate from the Academy of Cognitive and Behavioral Therapies (A-CBT), certified in Trial Based Cognitive Therapy (TBCT) after training with Dr. Irismar Reis de Oliveira MD, PhD and certified in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I). Jennifer is one of 57 ADHD-Certified Clinical Services Provider (ADHD-CCSP) in New York State and a Level 2 certified provider from The Gottman Institute. Other continuing training was completed at the Ellis Institute of Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy, The Feeling Good Institute with David Burns, and in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). Jennifer also incorporates emotional regulation skills and has a background in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) with training from Marsha Linehan, the creator of DBT.

Jennifer sees clients in person in New York City in the heart of the Flatiron/Union Square and is licensed and works virtually with clients located in MA, CT, NJ and FL.

Jennifer has Bachelor of Arts in psychology and government from Franklin and Marshall College. Outside of practicing therapy and running a practice, she resides in Brooklyn, enjoys a good workout and playing with her dog, Bear. She drinks too much coffee and not enough water (life goal).

My Approach

Who I work with

My approach is structured, active, and collaborative. Each session has a clear focus or agenda, and clients leave with new tools to use between appointments which can then be generalized outside of the sessions.

Two decades of practice have shaped my style: direct, warm, and focused on results.

I work with people who want to understand what's behind the problems that brought them to therapy and learn strategies for lasting change. Clients who are drawn to my practice often recognize that something isn't working and want to see real progress whether they are high achieving, work in competitive roles, or prone to anxiety and have difficulty managing stress or depressive and negative thoughts.

I see clients from different stages in life from motivated college and graduate students and in their early stages of their careers to individuals mid life struggling with juggling their own families, parents and middle and late stages in their careers.

Regardless of what is bringing you to therapy, I believe therapy should help you live in line with what matters to you. With training and certifications in various types of CBT, I'll work with you to build skills you can use in daily life: managing emotions, focusing your attention, handling stress, and making changes that stick.

How do we start?

Therapy with me starts with data, not guesswork. An in-depth intake and a few questionnaires show us exactly where you stand, so we can skip the warm-up and get specific right away. They also let us see whether things are improving.

From there, we will create a plan collaboratively based on the problems and goals bringing you to therapy with recommendations as needed.

Expect sessions that ask something of you. You'll pick up skills, try them out between appointments, and bring back what you learn. Many people finish within six months to a year, and you're welcome to return for a booster if life stirs things up again.
