Binge Eating

Binge eating involves episodes of eating with a sense of loss of control, often followed by shame and distress. It is not a failure of willpower. CBT helps you break the cycle of restriction, urges, and self-criticism, and build a steadier, more peaceful relationship with food.

How does CBT help Binge Eating?

Treatment targets understanding the triggers and negative thoughts maintaining this eating disorder and helps to reframe them. CBT addresses the hyper-focus on body image resulting in periods of restriction followed by binge cycles.

  • Regular, balanced eating. We establish a steady pattern of meals and snacks, which reduces the hunger and restriction that often lead to binges.

  • Understanding your triggers. You’ll learn to identify the thoughts, emotions, and situations that lead to binge episodes, so you can respond differently in the moment.

  • Changing unhelpful thoughts. We work on the rigid food rules, all-or-nothing thinking, and self-criticism that keep the cycle going.

  • Develop and strengthen other parts of your identity. During treatment, we will work on building up more meaning and sense of identity outside of body image/appearance.
